Ashford Castle
AS ONE PASSES THROUGH THE GRAND STONE GATES OF ASHFORD CASTLE, THERE’S AN IMMEDIATE SENSE OF ROYAL ELEGANCE AND LINEAGE. THE 800-YEAR OLD CASTLE WEARS ITS AGE GRACEFULLY AND CONTINUES TO BE KNOWN FOR ITS PASSIONATE DEDICATION TO THE GUEST EXPERIENCE.
Here, in the former home of the Guinness family (and today, Ireland’s first Forbes Five Star Hotel), within a 350-acre, park-like setting, visitors are treated like family. Richly detailed interiors are complemented by an award-winning spa, six restaurants, three chefs – and always, the Ashford Castle team, ready to attend to every whim. Active-minded guests are invited to partake in the countless outdoor pursuits available within County Galway, from falconry and horseback riding to boat trips on Lough Corrib and golfing on the estate’s own 9-hole course. At the close of the day, indulge in Chef Philippe Farineau’s exceptional dishes at George V beneath glittering chandeliers, to the tune of tinkling Waterford crystal. For a more casual dinner, enjoy owner Beatrice Tollman’s traditional favorites at the cozy Cullen’s at the Cottage. Be sure to toast to an exceptional Estate experience with the castle’s bespoke single malt whiskey.

This 800-year-old castle is truly remarkable, a grand, historic structure with national significance. The former home of the Guinness family, it has hosted countless notables over the years, including The Prince of Wales (who later became King George V) and President Ronald Reagan, and served as the striking backdrop for 1951 movie, The Quiet Man.
The long-established tradition of Afternoon Tea has been wonderfully preserved at Ashford Castle since 1868. You’ll notice the original silver tea set displayed in the Connaught Room, which was presented to Lord and Lady Ardilaun to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in 1896. In 1868, Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness bequeathed Ashford to his son, Lord Ardilaun, an avid gardener who oversaw the castle’s development and rebuilt the entire west wing.
