Two splendid Familiarization Trips, the first to London and Cornwall and the second to Scotland were the highlight of this month. In London, we stayed at The Goring and experienced the newly refurbished, jewel like Gainsbourough Silk, Belgravia Suites designed by Russell Sage. Cornwall was experienced through a wonderful stay at The Nare, my favorite country house by the sea where we visited a number of the great gardens in the county and indulged in lashings of Cornish clotted cream.
Next month, look for news of my Familiarization Trip to Scotland where we visited Cameron House on Loch Lomond, Aldourie, a private castle on Loch Ness, and finally The Torridon in the Highlands.
As love is in the air with Saint Valentine’s Day this month I wanted to write about a city very close to my own heart, Chester. With a history spanning more than 2000 years and located in the north west of England in the rural county of Cheshire, Chester boasts the largest amphitheatre in Britain as well as the beautiful Chester Cathedral, where in my school years I sang Evensong. I grew up from the age of three knowing The Chester Grosvenor, the hotel located right in the heart of the city, as my second home. The Chester Grosvenor holds many accolades and continues to be the highest rated city centre property outside of London. With train journey times of less than two hours between Chester and London, and only a thirty minute drive from Manchester International Airport, it is a very accessible part of the country to reach. It is also an ideal half way stop for people traveling between London and Scotland.

Just a short 20 minute drive from London Gatwick Airport, Rebecca was soon heading down the long drive to the hotel through the forested 1000 acre estate. The stunning Elizabethan Manor House, built in 1598, warmly greets you on arrival and it is surrounded by 35 acres of beautiful and historic gardens, designed and created by one of the world’s most pioneering gardeners, and Gravetye’s most notable owner, William Robinson.

From February, Cornwall's milder climate ensures that Spring comes earlier to Cornwall than elsewhere in the UK. The magnificent gardens at Caerhayes Castle come alive with the national collection of Magnolias, and many other gardens boast impressive Camellias and Rhododendrons. I fell in love with Cornwall the first time I went to experience The Nare, our Cornish Country House Hotel by the sea, making it the perfect English retreat from which to explore this amazing county.
