THE TORRIDON

 

HISTORIC HOUSE/CASTLE ATTRACTIONS:        Three historic house/castle attractions within a 45 minute drive from the hotel with an explanation of each attraction, the approximate driving time for each and the website address, if applicable.

  1. Eilean Donan Castle (1hr) :  Discover the history, see the stunning views, walk on the ramparts and catch whispers in the wind; they carry a myriad of tales of MacRaes, MacKenzies and much more.  www.eileandonan.com
  2. Dunvegan Castle, Isle of Skye (2 ½ hr): The stronghold of the Chiefs of MacLeod for nearly 800 years and it remains their home. Built on a Rock once surrounded entirely by salt water, it is unique in Scotland as the only house of such antiquity to have retained its family and its roof throughout the centuries, surviving the extremes of feast and famine, the intermittent periods of warring with neighbouring clans, and the immense changes of social, political and economic life through which the Western Highlands and Islands have passed. www.dunvegancastle.com

GARDENS:  Two gardens open to the public within a 45 minute drive from the hotel with an explanation of each, the approximate driving time for each and the website address if applicable.

  1. Inverewe Gardens, Poolewe (45 mins): The garden is nurtured by the warm currents of the North Atlantic Drift, and is set amidst some of the country’s finest scenery. A Scottish National Trust Property. Inverewe Garden
  2. Attadale Gardens, Lochcarron (45 mins): Twenty acres of old rhododendrons, woodland walks and exotically planted water gardens. A bridge over a waterfall with beautiful views of the sea and hills. www.wester-ross.com/attadale.htm
  3. Beinn Eighe Nature Reserve Beinn Eighe, Kinlochewe (15 mins): Britain’s first National Nature Reserve, features wonderful mountain scenery and ancient pinewood fragments overlooking Loch Maree. www.snh.org/nnr-scotland
  4. The Torridon Kitchen Garden (on site): We have our very own kitchen 2 acre garden located with our 58 acres of parkland. The garden grows a variery of vegetables, fruit & herbs as well as cut flowers for the house.


 

VILLAGE/TOWNS:           Three places either village/town or city of notable interest and what attractions/facilities are located at each within a 45 minute drive from the hotel.

  1. Ullapool (1 ½ hrs) : Ullapool has a range of restaurants, shops, cafes, bars, Live entertainment, Museum & Library, sea fishing, loch fishing, deer stalking, Car hire & Cycle hire, ferry to Stornoway and boat cruises
  2. Isle of Skye (1 hr): Here the stark rise of the jagged Cuillin ridge drops to the gentle white of a soft sand beach. Inlets, bays and islands create a complex lacework pattern with the sea. Tiny villages and historic keeps are familiar and fascinating. A place where time means nothing, and beneath every footstep lies 500 million years of history.
  3. Applecross (45 mins): Between the mainland mountain masses and the Island of Skye lies the Applecross Peninsula. Home to just 238 people, and accessed by only two roads, this is a haven from the noise and clutter of modern life. The Gaelic name for the area, ‘a Chomraich’, means ‘The Sanctuary’.
  4. Plockton (45 mins): Charming Village, famed for various film locations shoots. Good place to visit for seal trips and there are numerous places to drink and get a bite to eat.
  5. Gairloch (45 mins): Just north of Torridon, this is an ideal place to visit the heritage museum, play golf, and try your hand at water sports. There are 2 great marine trips available as well as pony trekking and numerous beaches.

 

LEISURE/SPORTING FACILITIES:     Leisure/sporting facilities that can be organised onsite or near by the hotel especially anything unusual, for example sheep dog trials.

  1. Torridon Activities are our in-house activity company. They offer Adventure Guiding inclusive of; mountain trails & low levels walks, kayaking, abseiling, climbing and mountain biking
  2. Also Archery and Clay Pigeon shooting available with tuition.

Applecross Estate Venison and as much garden produce as possible,veg ,fruit, and herbs. Cheeses come in from the West Highland Dairy. 1 hours drive no taxi available
  2. Three Chimneys Restaurant, Isle of Skye, (2 hrs): one of Scotland's most favourite restaurants, with a worldwide following

When considering a trip to Scotland, The Torridon is an ideal place to stay for the entire trip with so much to do, but it is also worth considering on a visit when staying at different hotels. We are 3 hours from the Isle of Eriska hotel, Oban, a great spot to catch the ferry to the isles and also visit the South West of Scotland. Alternatively there is The Marcliffe in Aberdeen, a hotel that caters for golfers only 4 hours from Torridon. If staying in Edinburgh please consider The Howard, a charming townhouse offering luxurious personal service.
